Editorial Reviews:

Put the saga of history's greatest overachiever -- Macedonian emperor Alexander the Great had conquered 90% of the pre-Christian world before his death at 32 -- in the hands of Hollywood's favorite over-reacher, Oliver Stone, and the result is three-hours of epic blood 'n' bathos. The soundtrack by Greek synth-score pioneer Vangelis Papathanassiou may be bookended by heroic orchestral/choral pomp of suitable scale and melodic dignity, but they buttress a far more compelling cocktail of primitive martial rhythms ("Drums of Gaugamela") and ancient ethnic-folk conceits ("Roxanne's Dance"). Though his film scores have become increasingly rare since the twin breakthroughs of his Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire and the sci-fi masterpiece Bladerunner, his work here argues that Vangelis' restless curiosity and musical range have only blossomed in the ensuing decades. With the exception of the final, club-targeted bonus cut, gone are his once overt electronics, replaced by a more organic, post-modern sense of fusion that evinces itself seductively on cues like "One Morning at Pella" and "Eastern Path." Elsewhere, cuts like "Across the Mountains" and "Tender Memories" are powered by Vangelis' trademark graceful lyricism, a trait that helps set this score apart from sword 'n' sandal contemporaries like Gladiator and Troy. --Jerry McCulley

Summary: So-so
Comment: I neither loved or hated this soundtrack but what turned me off is that I think it left out some music from the movie. One in particular is the battle music when he's fighting King Porus. Not the part when he has his little anticlimatic showdown I mean the battle itself.

Summary: Incomplete Soundtrack
Comment: There is a stunning piece of music where Alexander in India, after the arrow accident in Malvi, calls for retreat. He gets on his horse and sees Philip in the crowd, who nods giving his approval. The same piece surfaces again when Alexander dies and Ptolemy narrates how the two men died like Achilles and Pertrocles. There's another beautiful piece which goes while Alexander is in the midst of Hydaspes leading the cavalry towards Craterus, bearing the brunt of Porus' elephants, chanting, "come Macedonians, Ride, Ride". I've been an Alexandrophile since 9. And I found Vangelis' score so touching. It's a tragedy these important pieces of music went missing in the soundtrack.

Summary: Forget About the Movie
Comment: The movie was more or less a disappointment for many, but you have to forget about the movie and not make it part of your decision making whether or not to buy this music CD.

If there was anything great about the movie, then it was the music by the legendary Greek musician Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, known under his artist name "Vangelis". Vangelis has a reputation for producing great epic music master pieces and his music for Alexander is no exception and fits the bill perfectly.

The style is very similar to his music for the movie 1492 - Conquest of Paradise. If you loved that album, you will love this one as well. Fans of orchestral and electronic epical music will also be satisfied with this album.

Conclusion: Great buy for anybody, must by for Vangelis fans, Two thumbs up!

Summary: One haunting piece missing
Comment: The soundtrack was simply amazing, all of the pieces played added so much depth and life into the scenes they were played in. Except I am disappointed one of my favorite songs was left out. In the beginning scene in which Ptolemy is reflected his life and memories of Alexander to his scribes, there is a haunting theme playing throughout, prominently when the lighthouse and Alexandria bay is shown. Does anybody know the name of this track? Or where I can find it?

Summary: Excellent music!
Comment: I don't like the movie at all but the music is excellent. It is another Vangelis' brilliant creation. Not doubt about it. It's really relaxing.
