Set in modern times in the timeless land of the gods, A Lone Red Apple is a love story that takes place on the cosmopolitan Greek island of Mykonos and the nearby, sacred island of Delos. Just as these islands are opposites, so too are the lives of Matthew, a staid and shy British professor, and Elena, a lovely Greek artist with a passionate zest for life. They meet when Matthew comes to Mykonos to teach a seminar on the love poetry of Sappho. When Zeus awakens Aphrodite and Poseidon from ancient sleeps and instructs them to cause mischief in the lives of the mortals, Mathew and Elena experience a mythical Greece known only to the gods and a few, favored mortals.

Customer Rating: Summary: Unearthly Delights Comment: A Lone Red Apple is a light hearted romp through the islands of Mykonos and Delos in Greece, and the occasional foray into London, but does contain a number of serious undertones. It is a love story, but it entwines a number of dialectic themes; for example, quintessential cultural differences, development versus preservation; love versus passion; classical scholarship versus post-modernism; each in themselves worthy of a chapter if not a book. These become poignant issues when they are personalised, and while Aurelia only touches on these within the context of her characters, the focus is on the developing love between a quiet English Classics scholar and a spirited young Greek woman. Seemingly opposites, only divine intervention could bring these two together. And so it is, the Gods intervene and have some fun, and the reader is taken along on a delightful ride as we learn not only about Greek mythology and the poetry of Sappho but we also get glimpses of contemporary Greece.
The romance is not just in the love story, but also in the magic of Greece. Aurelia conveys the beauty of Greece, and it is not the Mykonos as most people see it, but a moment with a sunset, a glimpse into history, or the movement of a dance.
Whimsical, romantic, passionate and poetic, I was enchanted by The Lone Red Apple.
Customer Rating: Summary: A delightful story! Comment: This was just the gem I needed to get me excited about my recent visit to Mykonos. When I arrived on the island I felt that I already knew my way around because of the many references throughout the book. This was much better reading than any travelogue of Mykonos could have been!
Customer Rating: Summary: Delightful! Comment: This is a delightful romp through the quintessential Greek island, Mykonos. Aurelia weaves her modern romance between a British professor and an independent island woman with wonderful creativity. She blends the story with flashbacks (or perhaps, flash-ups) to the gods as they casually look down on us mortals, teaching us a fair amount about Greek history and culture, the stresses of modernization, and the inevitable clashes of cross-cultural friendship and love. Ambitious and creative, "Red Apple" is professionally and artistically packaged with first class artwork by Bill Papas that is happy and sensual.
Customer Rating: Summary: Insightful and whimsicial Comment: Having lived in Greece for one year,, I found this book to be authentic to Greek island life,,,,,,and also sincere in her characters and their feelings,,, I enjoyed the gods still toying with us mere "mortals"! It was not only entertaining....but also a wealth of information about Greek Poetry, and Mythology... I found myslef at the Library reading everything I can about the Greek Poet Sapho! It springboarded me also to paint a beautiful peice of art, the subject matter Greek Mythology! If a book can do all this , it has my highest reccomendation!
Customer Rating: Summary: A Lone Red Apple Comment: Aurelia has painted many pictures in my mind while I was reading her novel "Apple". I'll be visiting Greece next week and this novel made me long and anticipatingly waiting to be there and satisfy my eyes and fulfil the images I saw in many photographs.
