Editorial Reviews:

Classical Athens boasted some of the most original and influential achievements in literature, art, philosophy, medicine and politics. This best-selling book, now issued in a second edition, provides a comprehensive and highly illustrated introduction to its history, society, culture and values aimed at the student and the general reader. The text has been extensively revised from the first edition and the bibliography updated. A wide range of topics is discussed, but the book refuses to divide up the Athenian world neatly into separate compartments, insisting that sense can only be made of the society by making connections between its history, institutions, values and environment. The book can be used either on its own or as an accompaniment to students learning Greek with the Reading Greek course.

Customer Rating: Summary: Should be the example for other history books Comment: That is the best written history book I've read. The book really kept me concentrated on it for a long time with it's lively and information-rich structure. Book deals with nearly all aspects of life in Athens: political, economical, art, religious, classes, slaves, important people at the time. I would recommend to anyone who likes history generally or anybody who wants a good intro to ancient greeks especially Athens.
Customer Rating: Summary: One of the best reference books I own Comment: "The World of Athens" presents a history of Athens in a well organized format. Covers all aspects of Athenian history from geography to wars to politics. It is one of my most valued reference books.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good resource for Athenian society Comment: While this book covers the usual subjects like geography, religion, social apects, the wars etc., it gives enough information on everything to be the one book on classical Athens that you should have as a reference guide to further study. I used this booking when studying 5th century Athens and found that other books added to the information I got from it, but did not equal or replace its content.
